Columns

A column is a perpendicular, free-standing support. Columns classically support rooftops, gables, arches or arcades of a building, either replacing walls completely or partially. They can however also be used simply for decoration.

A column is divided into three parts: the base or basis, the shaft and the capital at the top. Only the shaft is required for construction purposes, the base and the capital are decorative aspects. With regard to the design of the three components, fixed rules have existed since ancient times, known as the classical order.

The blend of colours from the natural stone grain is particularly highlighted by the uniform shape of the column. In addition, columns of Obernkirchener Sandstein® are durable and weather-resistant.
